Narrowing down an avalanche of ideas
The best writing advice I've received is that if you want to become a published author, write what sells, not what you want to write. Before you cringe, let me explain. I don't mean that if you want to write romance novels, you should write a business book on networking or a motivational book, or a crime novel. If you have lots of ideas, like I do, and enjoy writing more than one kind of fiction, do a little research and see what's selling, and try writing what's hot.
I always have an abundance of ideas. It's difficult for me to pick one thing to write about. I enjoy reading and writing a variety of genres and subgenres: romance, erotica, BBW romance, historical romance (from a variety of time periods), paranormal romance of all kinds (vampires, werewolves, demons, shape shifters, etc.), fantasy, science fiction... the list goes on and on. Looking at what people are reading and enjoying right now has helped me to focus on one project currently.
This lets me get my voice as an author out there, and hopefully reach the largest number of people possible who will enjoy what I write. For me, this process hasn't been about 'selling out', it's helped me to focus on what I want to write right now.
